Title: Assistant Research Scientist, GIS and Remote Sensing
Location: Reno, Nevada
The Desert Research Institute’s (DRI’s) Division of Hydrologic Sciences is accepting applications for an Assistant Research Scientist of GIS and remote sensing, with a focus on estimation of evapotranspiration. This position is located in DRI’s Northern Nevada Science Center in Reno, NV and is intended to integrate ongoing research endeavors in DRI’s Divisions and multi-disciplinary Centers, and will complement cross-disciplinary programs linking hydrology, agriculture, remote sensing, GIS, and cloud and high performance computing.
The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for acquiring and processing GIS and remote sensing data sets from government and private providers; including analysis of multispectral optical and thermal datasets for estimating evapotranspiration and other land surface states and fluxes. The successful candidate should have backgrounds in programming and programming applications for environmental modeling and assessment. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the development of multidisciplinary, collaborative grant proposals focused on remote sensing of evapotranspiration, laboratory, field and/or numerical research for quantifying mass and energy transfer across the land-atmosphere boundary, and use of instrumentation and techniques like eddy covariance. The successful candidate will support ongoing and new programs at DRI related to water resources and water use assessments across the western U.S. and other arid and semi-arid regions. Candidates that have strong programming skills and who use remote sensing and gridded weather data to evaluate evapotranspiration, drought, and vegetation conditions are strongly encouraged to apply.
-M.S. with a focus on remote sensing, hydrology, agriculture, atmospheric science, or a related field from an accredited institution
-Experience with GIS and remote sensing of evapotranspiration
-Demonstrated experience in spatial analysis and modeling software platforms such as ArcGIS
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Evidence of the ability to participate in collaborative research
-Ability to participate in the development of research proposals
-Ability to work independently to fulfill project goals and meet project deadlines
-Experience in batch processing, cloud and/or high performance computing of remote sensing and gridded weather data (i.e. Google Earth Engine, Amazon Cloud, multi-processing on local computers) -Experience with time series analysis
-Experience with web mapping and visualization
