Description: “Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology, and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. This Environmental Scientist 3 (ES3) position is being recruited for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP), Bureau of Corrective Actions Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Branch. The ES3 will serve as technical support and project management support for AML Site investigations and assessments. The successful candidate will demonstrate general and specific knowledge, skills and abilities reflective of an environmental scientist professional, such as field sampling equipment and technologies. This position also requires strong organizational skills. The ES3 is expected to work in a team environment with other AML staff, other agencies, the regulated community, private property owners and stakeholders. The ES3 must also be able to work independently once sufficiently trained.

The ES3 will work closely with contractors and will progress towards taking on increasingly greater responsibilities, including project management. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work safely and effectively in adverse field conditions while performing technical tasks. This position requires making consistent, defensible and timely decisions using sound judgment skills. This ES3 will also be expected to review remedial design plans and oversee remedial actions at various AML sites throughout Nevada. This position also functions as data management and database support. The candidate will be able to document a clear understanding of basic scientific principles related to hydrology, geology, environmental remediation technologies, and must have experience with, or a familiarity with, technical tools of the profession. The ES3 will also be encouraged to seek out and participate in specific trainings that support job function. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research, planning, and technical support; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.”
