Description: The function of this position is to provide technical and programmatic leadership for the Remote-Sensing Group of the National Security Emerging Technologies (NSET) Divison. The Remote-Sensing Group in the NSET division at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) advances research and development regarding data collected by both active and passive sensor types for spaceborne, airborne, and terrestrial environments. The tasks accomplished impact a multitude of projects across the division as well as the world.
“Responsibilities: Major Duties/Responsibilities

The group lead will provide the vision and supervision of the group of individual researchers to define and align its activities with the division science agenda. A key function is to establish and conduct research within the field of remote-sensing with special emphasis on image quality and object detection that is directly applicable to current national security, environmental, and other geospatial research issues. The group lead will engage in research, development, and refinement of remote sensing algorithms regarding large earth observation image and video streams, spectral and spatial exploitation, sensor characterization and modeling, and planning and execution of field campaigns involving multi-modal remote sensing platforms and sensors to solve problems such as: national security concerns, natural resources studies, emergency management, hazardous waste analysis, and object detection/classification studies in support of human dynamics. The successful candidate will be responsible for the research, development, and deployment of imagery/video requirements, technical leadership on remote-sensing supporting various projects, design and integration of complex decision making architectures involving remotely-sensed data, and algorithmic development and implementation. Publications and presentation of research in professional journals and presented to the scientific community are expected. Willingness to coordinate and guide a group of scientists and developers working on multiple projects that span the entire range of remote-sensing is necessary. Frequent interaction with sponsors is a part of the work effort. Mentoring of staff members and student research associates to help individual professional development and evaluating individual and team performance metrics is expected. Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a group member are essential.”

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree in remote-sensing, geography, physical sciences, or related area and 12+ years of experience, or a PhD in any of the above-mentioned disciplines and 6+ years of experience.

Comprehensive understanding of remote-sensing, algorithms for detection and classification of earth observations, and the physics of optical systems in support of remote-sensing systems.

Comprehensive understanding of the engineering behind airborne, spaceborne, and terrestrial sensors for collecting multispectral to hyperspectral imagery data, uncertainty in collections, and the measurement of performance and effectiveness of remote-sensing systems.

Experience organizing and leading teams comprised of members with diverse expertise on projects for scientific or big data informatics.

Demonstrated record of scholarship including publications.
