Description: The function of this position is to provide technical and programmatic leadership for the Special Communications and Autonomous Systems (SCAS) Group of the National Security Emerging Technologies Division. The SCAS Group is responsible for the research and development of broad-spectrum RF communications, embedded systems technology using software defined and cognitive radio communications, unmanned aerial vehicle communications and autonomous function utilizing machine learning, secure vehicle communications and secure communications technologies for national security applications.

Responsibilities: The group lead will provide the vision and supervision for a group of individual researchers to define and align its activities with the division science agenda. A key function is to lead, grow and coordinate program activities related to autonomy, unmanned systems, unique communication systems, signal-based measurement systems, application specific algorithms and machine learning solutions for applications in resiliency, natural and urban environments, and national security. The successful candidate will be responsible for the analysis and specification of hardware and software requirements, technical leadership on software development projects, architectural design and integration of complex systems and software, and algorithmic development and implementation. Publications and presentation of research in professional journals and presented to the scientific community are expected. Willingness to coordinate and guide a team of scientists and developers working on multiple projects that span both communications and unmanned systems is necessary. Frequent interaction with sponsors is a part of the work effort. The Group Leader should be able to balance administrative, NSET, business development, project management, mentoring and career development activities along with research leadership responsibilities. Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer and information sciences, telecommunications, signals, computer engineering, data science, decision science, robotics, or related area and 7+ years of experience, or a PhD and 4+ years of experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of common patterns, architectures, and best practices of enterprise application development.
  • Comprehensive understanding of common software development methodologies and project management processes.
  • Experience organizing, and leading teams comprised of members with diverse expertise on projects for scientific or engineering systems.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship including publications.
